After many years of indoor and outdoor family photography, what I’ve learned is this: 90 percent of the time, Mom is the driver in all of this; she wants the photos, she’s coordinating the outfits, the date, finding the photographer, looking at the kids’ sports and activities schedules, to find that window of opportunity for the yearly family mini session, to post some pics and to have a beautiful family photo for the Christmas card and to print for the home and for Grandma and maybe a few others.
That’s not all….To continue on what I’ve learned, is Mom is the one choosing the photos and Mom - If you don’t look good in them, you ain’t buying ‘em! This I know for sure. Moms will have their hair touched up, nails done, everyone’s outfits cleaned, ironed, laid out for each kid and probably Dad, too. Meanwhile, the kids are going complain that the sweater is itchy, the shoes are too tight, they don’t want to get their hair brushed, you know, normal kid things and Dad, well, in my many years of doing this, Dads have a tendency to lay down the line. Dads…help Mom, everyone stay calm…stay positive…This too shall pass…haha…
What If for a few bucks, I can help alleviate some of the pressure of your mini session by providing you with a guide on how to do this yourself…with your smartphone and a smartphone stand? You can do this somewhere local, or in your home, you don’t need to travel to the photographer…This guide will show you posing, lighting and iphone settings to use, so you can take photos hands free of your family. There is also some guidance on where to print and how many pixels are needed for different sized photos. the link is below to purchase the guide right now it’s 5 bucks.
This is us….last year, I found this local place that was set up and also had an iphone stand already so I didn’t need to bring mine. As you can see, we got alot of pictures, and this was hands free. This shows just a few of what we took that day. We got alot of candid photos and the kids had alot of fun going through them in the car afterward. Even though they’re teens and not little ones, I still had to bribe them to do this and we went to The Grinch’s Grotto at Cucina Calandra is located at 216 Route 46 East, Fairfield, NJ 07004 afterward for lunch. It was a great day, light, easy, fun and memorable. It was a great start to our Holiday season last year and I hope we do it again this year.
The photos were taken at Pine and Pixels www.pineandpixelsnj.com You can find places that have set ups specifically for family photos in your local Moms group facebook page. You set a time, I think it may have been like $20 maybe? And we not only got a ton of pictures, but we had a ton of laughs. I highly recommend.
It was EASY…and I wanted to pass this easy way to get your family photos done onto you, so I created this guide and it’s CURRENTLY JUST $5. HERE’S THE LINK: https://www.diysmartphonephotos.com/store

Yes, My kids don’t like ME posting their photos all over social media, and my husband doesn’t have the best smile here, but I was happy with my smile, so this is the one I decided to post. Proving my point, MOMS, You’re not going to post a picture if you don’t like the way you look in it. This was as great option for us, as I was able to go through all of the photos, and choose the ones I loved best then handed the phone to my kids, so they send themselves the ones they wanted. It was a win/win/win as it didn’t take much time, I didn’t have to decorate because Pine and Pixels in Boonton did it all for us already (thank you very much!) and We were in and out of there with a ton of laughs, pictures and then lunch at the Grinch’s Grotto. I Highly recommend for an easy breezy holiday mini session. I also have other guides for newborns and will continue to add guides for other types of sessions, too. DO I NEED A FANCY CAMERA? NOPE. If you have one, great, but it’s not necessary. The truth is, all you need is a good natural light and a little guidance on what to do and where to place your baby. Our tutorials are designed around natural lighting, so you don’t need strobes or complicated editing tricks. We even share a few smartphone hacks to make your photos look professional without the stress.
PRO TIP: Would you like one of the secrets to a successful newborn photo session? A happy, sleepy baby. Make sure your little one has had a full feed before you begin. If you start photos halfway through a feed because they’re drowsy already, they’ll likely wake up mid-pose needing more to eat, and you won’t be done with your photos yet. Instead, aim for a full feed, a burp, and even a quick diaper change. Once your baby is content and dozing off, you’ll have those dreamy, curled-up poses every parent loves.
WHY DIY? Newborn photos that are taken at home aren’t just budget-friendly, but also deeply personal. You’re capturing memories in your baby’s very first space, surrounded by love and comfort. For many moms, DIY is the way to go: affordable, flexible, and still gorgeous.
